Poeta británico. Hijo de tenderos, se educó en la Universidad de Cambridge. En 1956 contrajo matrimonio con la poetisa estadounidense Sylvia Plath. Sus primeros poemarios fueron El halcón en la lluvia (1957) y Lupercal (1960). Tras el suicidio de su esposa en 1963, apenas escribió durante tres años; luego inició una carrera prolífica, a menudo en colaboración con ilustradores o fotógrafos. Entre sus obras se cuentan Wodwo (1967), Cuervo (1970), Cave Birds [Pájaros cavernícolas] (1975), Gaudete [Alegraos] (1977) y Wolf Watching [Observando a los lobos] (1989). Su obra más característica resalta la astucia y ferocidad de la vida animal en versos ásperos, a veces disyuntivos. Hughes escribió numerosos libros infantiles, como El hombre de hierro (1968), y fue editor de Modern Poetry in Translation [La poesía moderna traducida]. En 1984 fue nombrado poeta laureado de Gran Bretaña. Cartas de cumpleaños (1998), publicado poco antes de su muerte, contiene reveladores poemas acerca de su relación con Plath.
